BSL Videos. Project explanation and 2 opportunities for deaf practitioners/artists/people

Hi, I’m Sami, I hope you are all well. I’m an interpreter, I interpret theatre and I’ve worked with Leeway for a while now. They have a new project with two opportunities that I’d like to encourage deaf people to apply for.
So, I’ll tell you a bit about the project and there will be two separate videos to explain more about the two roles available.
So, the project is called ‘Porth Y Cwtsh’. It focuses on Porth and the
people who live there. Their minds, their hearts, their culture. To come together and visualise the future, removing the stereotype of poverty and showing what is beautiful; their language – spoken Welsh and possibly sign language if BSL is used. Also, to boldly show their culture and sense of home.
Leeway have given me an interesting fact that I’d like to tell you! The planet Mars has a crater named Porth so it shows that Porth really is an amazing place!
Their Vision is to build on what’s strong, not on what’s wrong and to use what you have.
I have to tell you about their funding which comes from Arts Council of Wales and is called the Connect and Flourish. It means that three companies are working together; Leeway, Menter Iaith Rhondda Cynon Taf and Age Cymru have come together to focus specifically on Porth.

So, the opportunity is for the role of creative practitioner. If you are a creative freelancer, you can apply. You don’t need to have loads of experience or knowledge, maybe you are just starting out, that is perfect because you will be working with a lead creative practitioner. They are able to offer support and mentoring to help you develop your skills.
So, what does it mean to be a Creative Practitioner? You will support the lead artists, add your own creative ideas and be involved in discussions to make sure this project stays on track to represent Porth and its community.
Leeway have found 5 areas in Porth and 1 individual in each area, you will support these and encourage relationships and discussions. Their key questions are:
What do you need right now?
What was the community of Porth like before?
What is the worst that could happen here?
What is the best that could happen here?
If you feel you are suitable for this role and you are a creative freelancer in the Porth area please apply!

- Either write or film explaining who you are and a skill you want to explore or develop. What is your creative area? It could be theatre, art, dance, whatever yours is.
- Send an example of you and your work. Eg A website link or a video, anything you like. If you don’t have much, that’s absolutely fine, send it anyway. Remember this is for people at the start of their career to help develop their experience and skills, so please do send what you have.
- If you need an interpreter or STTR or a note taker, that’s fine. Just let them know, they will provide for any access needs.
- Let them know where you are from or where you live. This project is focussing on Porth so they want to make sure they are bringing in people from the right area.
When I finish signing the next the screen will show information on salary, when the project will be and how and when to send your application. So all that information will be visual on the screen, okay.

Hi, I’m Sami, I’m an interpreter and I’ve worked with Leeway for a while now. I want to let you know about a new opportunity. This is an opportunity for creative artists to be involved in a workshop. It is a paid opportunity for 10 creatives, that could include a range of artists including stage managers, actors or LX designers, for example. If you are a creative artist who lives or is based in the Rhondda you can apply.
If you are interested in how to work with your local community this workshop could be perfect for you. It’s delivered by an experienced person who knows how to bring together art and community. This workshop will give insights into how we can put the community and people in the centre of what we do. Also, Leeway will explain their project, Porth y Cwtsh in the hope that you will be inspired to join in moving forward. Porth y Cwtsh is designed by all who choose to get involved, this is perfect for deaf people to add the influence of deaf history, culture and language into this project.
So, how to apply if you are interested in this workshop:
- Either write or film explaining who you are, your area of creative work, why you’d like to participate in the workshop and what you want to learn.
- If you need an interpreter or STTR or a note taker, that’s fine. Just let them know, they will provide for any access needs.
- Let them know where you are from or where you live. They want to focus specifically on RCT.
